Privacy Policy

Summary

Contento is a command-line tool you install from npm. The free tier has no Contento account, no hosted database, and no server that holds your generated content — the CLI runs on your machine, calls the AI provider you configure with your own API key, and writes output to your local filesystem. Pro Team and White-Glove customers also use a hosted dashboard at app.contento.sh; the data flowing to that dashboard is described below.

The only information we process is what flows through the marketing website at contento.sh. This policy explains what that is.

1. What the CLI Sends to Us

Nothing. The Contento CLI does not phone home, does not send telemetry, and does not transmit usage data to any Contento-controlled server. It does communicate with three categories of third-party services you direct it at:

• The AI provider you configure — OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq, OpenRouter, or a local/self-hosted OpenAI-compatible model. Prompts, niche context, and the resulting generations transit your provider's API under their privacy policy.
• Google Search Console — only if you run contento analytics connect and complete the OAuth flow. The refresh token stays on your machine; analytics queries go directly from your machine to Google.
• The npm registry — on initial install and updates, to fetch the package itself.

2. Where Your Data Lives

All Contento data sits on your machine in two places:

• ~/.contento/ — AI provider config, custom niches, GSC tokens, analytics SQLite cache, generation logs.
• contento.config.json in each project directory — project metadata and chrome paths.

You can inspect, edit, back up, version-control, or delete any of these files at any time. We have no copy.

3. The contento.sh Website

When you visit our marketing website, we may collect:

• Server log data — standard request logs (IP address, user agent, referrer, timestamp) retained for up to 30 days for abuse prevention and debugging.
• Privacy-respecting analytics — aggregated visit metrics with no cross-site tracking and no personal identifiers.

4. Sponsorship & Email Contact

If you sponsor the project on GitHub or email us, that contact information is processed by GitHub and our email provider respectively under their privacy policies. We use it solely to acknowledge your support or reply to your message; we do not add it to a marketing list.

5. Your Rights

Because Contento does not run a hosted product, the question of "delete my account data" largely doesn't apply — there's no account to delete. If you've emailed us or sponsored the project, you can request deletion of those records by emailing the address below. Under GDPR, CCPA, and similar laws, you retain the standard rights of access, rectification, erasure, and objection over any personal data we hold.

6. Children

The Contento website and CLI are not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will remove it.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the project evolves. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be announced in the project repository.
